Family Therapy

Family therapy addresses individual and collective concerns, creating a balanced approach where every member can grow and heal. By focusing on the family as a whole, this type of therapy provides tools for more resilient relationships, better communication, and a stronger foundation for dealing with life’s challenges together.

In family therapy sessions, you can expect a supportive environment where every member has a voice, and healing is approached as a collective journey. At Evergreen, family therapy sessions are common for:

  • Parents and young kids
  • Parents and teenagers
  • Grandparents and grandchildren
  • Blended families
  • Families with adult children
  • Kinship and chosen families

A common approach in family therapy, especially in cases involving children with mental health symptoms, divorce, or parental mental health struggles, is structural family therapy. This method focuses on understanding family dynamics, roles, and relationships. It highlights how each person contributes to the family system. In sessions, we will work to identify and gently reshape any patterns that may be causing stress or misunderstanding, helping to establish healthier boundaries and clearer roles within the family.

Using a client-centered approach, family therapy sessions are designed to support each family member’s unique needs and perspectives. We encourage open communication, actively listen, and validate the emotions of each participant.

This approach is especially beneficial for children and teens, as it shows them they are an important part of the family’s healing process. Children experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders, for example, may feel empowered when they see their family working together to support them, rather than feeling singled out as the “problem.”

“We must take care of our families wherever we find them.” ― Elizabeth Gilbert
